DIY projects in old gardening magazines

The sun is shining… and the birds are singing… making it the perfect day to get out in the garden. But with your seedlings reaching for the sky and your compost bursting at the seams… what’s there to do that doesn’t involve breaking your back pulling weeds? It’s time for a DIY project!

For ideas, Pinterest does, of course, come to mind. But I’ve found the best thing is to put together a collection of gardening magazines. They don’t have to be new – I bought plenty off Facebook Marketplace, on average, for less than $1 each. Op-shops are a great source of old magazines and books, too.

They offer a great source of inspiration if you flick through an old magazine of the same month or season and find out what gardeners before you were up to.

Here are some of my favourites.

Better Homes and Gardens

If you love the TV show, you’ll quickly become obsessed with the range of DIY projects in the Better Homes and Gardens magazine. And, there’s plenty of recipes for all that delicious produce you’ve harvested.

Gardening Australia – ABC

Jam-packed with gardening information relevant to the month and looking to the next season, the magazine covers topics including taking cuttings, propagating, pruning, rookie errors, repotting, controlling pests, removing weeds, and ideas for pots and beds (including self-watering pots).

Organic Gardener – ABC

Organic gardening is increasing in popularity and it’s easy to see why, with the positive impacts on the environment, economy and health. The ABC Organic Gardener magazine focuses on how to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs – all organically – as well as looking at non-toxic household supplies.

Good Organic Gardening

It’s another organics magazine but that only hammers the point home about the increase in popularity. Learn how to grow fresh food which tastes great and is good for the environment. They cover some everyday Aussies with their real-life gardens, too!

Our Gardens

Published by The Garden Clubs of Australia Inc, you can dive into gardening stories and photos from across Australia. In previous editions, they have published tips for winning gardening competitions and how garden clubs helped re-plant in communities impacted by bushfire.
