How to start a vegetable garden

Starting a vegetable garden is a great way to get more fresh produce into your diet and save money.

If you’re new to gardening, there are a few things you need to know before planting your first crop.

I’ve compiled a list of videos and other resources below – as well as additional tips – but first, know that the most important thing is to choose the right location for your garden.

It should be sunny and well-drained, with good air circulation and room for you to walk around comfortably.

Vegetables also need plenty of water, so make sure your soil is well-drained too. You can create quality soil by mixing in compost, manure and garden soil.

You’ll also want to ensure that the area you choose doesn’t have any chemical contaminants from previous uses.

In Australia, spring is the best time to start most vegetables from seedlings or seed packets (although some crops can be sown directly into the ground).

You can buy these from garden centres or online retailers.

They’re easy to grow, but you’ll need some basic equipment like pots or trays, compost and a watering can or hose.
