Fast-growing, January flowering: Leptospermum Copper Glow

The Leptospermum Copper Glow looks great year-round, but its flowers are a hit over Summer.

I’ve got six Leptospermums out the front and they usually flower around Christmas time, although this season it was closer to the New Year.

The white flowers really bring the front yard to life – even more so when I’ve managed to get out there with the mower and whipper snipper.

Plus, Leptospermums are fast-growing and hardy. When I first planted them, going back two years, they offered no shade or privacy but they’ve gone absolutely bananas with little to no care.

I can’t recall the last time I watered them, although they’re sitting in about 20cm of mulch so that’s probably keeping them happy.

After flowering, I spend some tome manicuring the plants into a nice hedge so they can continue to play their part in keeping the front of the house a bit cooler and stopping the lawn from getting scorched in the hot sun.

Leptospermums are similar to Bottlebrushes in that they do well in coastal climates and are extremely hardy.

ABC Gardening Australia’s Millie Ross learnt to use the harder cultivator, Copper Glow, over Leptospermum Burgundy as the latter died after being planted in the garden.
