Harvest time!

Carrots, beetroots and eggplants freshly harvested

Our first winter day in the garden proved fruitful, harvesting beetroot, carrots (Chantenay and Rainbow mix), eggplants, snow peas, sugar snap peas and what we think is the last of our apple cucumber, capsicums, chilli (we only got one) and capsicums.

What have you got growing right now?

The elongated gardening season is main one thing I miss about living in Australia (outside of friends). So jealous that you’re still getting eggplants.
I’ve still got to restore and rebuild my veg garden after moving back to Rotorua and getting my house back from tenants, so nothing in the ground at present. I’m aiming to have them ready for spring planting. After having dismal growing seasons in Wellington these last few years, where not even the weedy zucchini was very successful (two plants giving me a grand total of 2 zucchini!), I’m looking forward to being able to have better growing season, and being able to “shop” from my garden instead of the supermarket.

I am very jealous of your beets and carrots, they almost look too good to eat. I’ve never had any luck with root veg, I get a lovely green top then a spindly, misshapen root underneath, must be the soil. We’re growing tomatoes, chilli’s, pumpkin, squash, courgettes this year. We’re also trying to establish a little fruit forest with apple and cherry trees, raspberries and wine berries, rhubarb and strawberries.

Your fruit forest sounds delightful – let me know how you go! I’ve grown strawberries but haven’t tried any of the others.

Envy! 100%! We have a very short growing season in Finland. It’s a real challenge. Even if th plants grow and flower, you might not have enough time for the veg/fruit to ripen.

Oh no! How annoying. Hopefully greenhouses give them a good kickstart

If only I had one. My gardens here are only temporary as we’re planning to return to Scotland in s few years. I didn’t think it was worth the hassle.

Those beets look gorgeous! I’ve planted them for the first time this year and am looking forward to seeing how they turn out. And it looks like you went for the purple carrots, too — they’re so much fun to sprinkle into unsuspecting people’s salads 😀 Another gardener in Finland here, doing all sorts of things to extend the season. Greenhouses, raised beds, cloches, coldframes, fleece, you name it. The fact that most Australian winters average around the same as Finnish summers in temperature still amuses me to no end.
